Middleton Place Plantation Discover the beauty of Middleton Place, America's oldest landscaped gardens, laid out in 1741. The home has belonged only to descendants of the two families for which it is named and is furnished entirely with family pieces. On your tour, you can visit the rooms where General Robert E. lee took refuge during the Civil War and where General P.G.T. Beauregard watched the bombing of Fort Sumter. Nathaniel-Russell House This fully restored, Federal style townhouse completed in 1808, is furnished with fabulous period furniture. Set amid gracious gardens, the house is recognized as one of America's most important neoclassical dwellings. The famous "free-flying" staircase is a Charleston must-see. (Tour last approximately 40 minutes) Located at 51 Meeting Street in Downtown Charleston, the Nathaniel-Russell House is 3 miles from the Holiday Inn Patriots Point. Upon arrival, you will receive an audiotape and headphones to take this self-guided audio tour and explore this treasure. As you travel through the home, carriage house, kitchen house, slaves' quarters and privies, you will see and hear the interaction between all parts and people of the home. Discover layers of paints and wallpaper that have not been restored, but rather preserved to show the original décor. (Allow approximately 1 hour for self-guided audio tour.) Located at 48 Elizabeth Street in Downtown Charleston, the Aiken-Rhett House is 3 miles from the Holiday Inn Patriots Point. Heyward-Washington House Learn the story behind the Heyward-Washington House name (built in 1772), and the history of the original owner Thomas Heyward (he signed the Declaration of Independence). (Guided tour lasts approximately 30 minutes.) Located at 87 Church Street in Downtown Charleston, the Heyward-Washington House can be found 3 miles from the Holiday Inn Patriots Point. Joseph Manigault House Built in 1803, The Joseph Manigault House was one of the first houses in America to be restored for historic preservation purposes. (Guided tour lasts approximately 30 minutes.) Located at 350 Meeting Street in Downtown Charleston, the Joseph Manigault House is 3 miles from the Holiday Inn Patriots Point. Cabbage Row Not really a home or a garden but definitely an area of interest. Cabbage Row is the section of Church St. used as the inspiration for "Catfish Row" in the Dubose Heyward story, "Porgy." This story was the basis for Gershwin's opera "Porgy and Bess. The character "Porgy" was based on an actual Charlestonian, Samuel Smalls. Cypress Gardens
Once one of South Carolina's most prosperous rice plantations, Cypress Gardens is a place of beauty and discovery. Today, Cypress Gardens is a 170-acre Berkeley County park with beautiful gardens, walking paths and cypress swamp. Explore exhibits and trails. See real alligators and crocodiles. Walk among butterflies. Visitors tour the swamp in flat-bottom boats and are amazed at the beauty and serenity of the cypress swamp. Folly Beach is a barrier island, six miles long and the closest beach to historic Charleston, South Carolina. Folly Beach is the home of sea, sand, and surfing, historical and cultural sites; a maritime forest; Morris Island Lighthouse; The Folly Pier; gourmet food, endangered species of birds; and southern hospitality. You'll find small public parking lots adjacent to beach access paths, and parking is permitted along the side streets (be sure to keep all tires off the pavement so you don't get a parking ticket!).

| Sullivan's Island is a residential community located north of downtown Charleston past Mt. Pleasant. For additional information visit: http://PatriotsPoint.org H.L. Hunley Pay a visit to the H.L. Hunley, the world's 1st successful combat submarine! The Hunley was a Confederate submarine used in the Civil War and is renowned as the first submarine in history to sink an enemy warship. On February 17th, 1864, the Hunley sunk the Union ship, USS Husatonic, in the Charleston Harbor. However, on the Hunley's return trip home through the harbor, she mysteriously sank and was not discovered until 1995! The Hunley was uncovered in 2000, raised from the Charleston Harbor in 2001, and now rests at the Warren Lasch Conservation Center in North Charleston. The H.L. Fort Sumter National Monument Construction of the fort on this man-made island began in 1829 and was still not completed on December 26 1860, when, under cover of darkness, Major Robert Anderson moved his troops from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter. On April 12, 1861, Confederate forces at Fort Johnson fired the first shot of the Civil War at Union-occupied Fort Sumter. After a 34-hour bombardment, Major Anderson surrendered and Confederate troops occupied the fort. Fort Sumter then became a symbol of Southern resistance. Union forces on Morris Island bombarded Fort Sumter from 1863 to 1865 in one of the longest sieges in warfare. By February 17, 1865, when the Confederates evacuated the fort, it was little more than a heap of rubble. The original palmetto log fort was started in 1776 and was only half completed when attacked by a British fleet on June 28, 1776. Colonel William Moultrie's South Carolinians repelled this assault in one of the first decisive patriot victories of the Revolution. This battle began a tradition of seacoast defense on Sullivan's Island that did not end until 1947. The Fort Moultrie Visitor Center is located on West Middle St. on Sullivan's Island, approximately 8 minutes from the Holiday Inn Patriots Point. In the late 1600's, the construction of walls around the city and the building of harbor forts added to the defensive character of Charleston. The Powder Magazine was crucial to storage of powder for defense of the city. Although replaced by a newer magazine in 1748, it continued to serve effectively for its purpose into the period of the American Revolution. Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon Built by the British as the Exchange and Customs House in 1771, American Patriots were held prisoner in the Provost during the Revolutionary War. The Old Exchange played a huge role in American history and is one of the three most historically significant buildings of colonial America.
